Classic Swedish Meatballs
Ingredients:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 pound ground pork
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 egg
- 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- Chopped fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, ground allspice, ground nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined.
2. Shape the meat mixture into small meatballs, about 1 inch in diameter.
3. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the meatballs to the skillet and cook until browned on all sides and cooked through, about 8-10 minutes. You may need to do this in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan. Once cooked, transfer the meatballs to a plate and set aside.
4. In the same skillet, sprinkle the flour over the remaining drippings. Cook, stirring constantly, for about 1 minute to create a roux.
5. Gradually whisk in the beef broth until smooth, then add the heavy cream and Worcestershire sauce. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until slightly thickened, about 5 minutes.
6. Return the meatballs to the skillet and simmer for an additional 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the meatballs are heated through and the sauce has thickened to your desired consistency.
7. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper if needed.
8. Serve the Swedish meatballs hot, garnished with chopped fresh parsley if desired. They are delicious served over egg noodles, mashed potatoes, or with lingonberry sauce on the side. Enjoy your classic Swedish meatballs!
