Cajun Fried Okra
Ingredients:
- 1 pound fresh okra, washed and sliced into 1/2-inch rounds
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions:
1. In a large bowl, soak the sliced okra in buttermilk for at least 30 minutes to 1 hour. This helps reduce the sliminess of the okra and adds flavor.
2. In a separate bowl, mix together the cornmeal, flour, Cajun seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
3. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large skillet to 350°F (175°C).
4. Drain the buttermilk from the okra slices and dredge them in the seasoned cornmeal mixture until well coated.
5. Carefully place the coated okra slices in the hot oil, working in batches to avoid overcrowding the fryer.
6. Fry the okra slices for 3-4 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy, stirring occasionally to ensure even cooking.
7. Once done, use a slotted spoon or tongs to transfer the fried okra to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
8. Sprinkle with additional salt and pepper if desired while still hot.
9. Serve the Cajun fried okra immediately as a crispy and flavorful appetizer or side dish.
Enjoy the irresistible crunch and spicy kick of this Southern favorite!
